Getting By ferry

Ferries are mostly popular among people bringing their own cars to Hokkaido.  Ferries from Hakodate link to northern ports in Tohoku, including the Shimokita Peninsula.  Otaru provides links to Maizuru (near Kyoto) and Seoul.

Tomakomai also provides ferries to a number of domestic destinations:

* Shin Nihonkai Ferry (新日本海フェリー) www.snf.co.jp (Japanese) +81-145-28-2800 operates out of the Tomakomai (East) Ferry Terminal www.snf.co.jp (Japanese), and provides regular ferry service to Akita, Niigata, and Tsuruga in Niigata Prefecture. It also provides occaisional services to Maizuru in Kyoto Prefecture.

* Taiheiyo Ferry (太平洋フェリー) [4] (Japanese) +81-144-34-5185 provides overnight ferries to Sendai and Nagoya from the Tomakomai (West) Ferry Terminal [5] (Japanese).

Wakkanai has a ferry connection with Russia


* Heartland Ferry (ハートランドフェリー株式会社) www.heartlandferry.co.jp (Japanese) +81-011-233-8010 Operates a weekly (May to September) ferry service between Wakkanai and the Russian port of Korsakov, on the island of Sakhalin
